The current Porsche auction record of $14.08m is held by another Gulf-liveried 917 K, also driven by Hailwood in 1970. Chassis No24 was the first 917 to see competition at the 100Km of Spa, in its original, unstable configuration.

Now, 917-022 is set for auction again in January 2025 at Mecum's Kissimmee event. A price estimate has not been given, but the other 917K used in filming for Le Mans sold in 2017 for $14 million.

With a chassis designed by Helmuth Bott and engine developed by Hans Mezger – who in the 1980s designed the Porsche-built TAG Turbo Formula 1 engine for the all-conquering McLaren MP4/2 – 25 cars were made for homologation purposes. Eventually, some 65 examples of the Porsche 917 would go on to be built in total.

This Porsche 917K was immortalized as the race winner in Steve McQueen's 1971 film Le Mans, and was the Gulf-Porsche works entry for Mike Hailwood and David Hobbs in the 1970 Le Mans 24 Hours. An icon among icons, this 917K is an incomparable example of one of the greatest race cars ever.

The Porsche 917 won the 24 Hours of Le Mans twice, once in 1970 and again in 1971. It rose to become a legend among legends and remains a firm favourite among motor racing enthusiasts. The race winner built by the German marque is a genuine icon that continues to shine 50 years on.
